Punjab News- In a significant move aimed at intensifying the fight against drug-related crimes, the Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is set to double the strength of the Special Task Force (STF) from 400 to 814 personnel. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to eradicating the drug menace from the state and ensuring a safer Punjab.
Enhanced Capabilities with Advanced Technology
According to a proposal by Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, the increased manpower will include more officers trained in technical investigations. This expansion aims to provide robust investigative capabilities, necessary for tackling the evolving methods used by drug smugglers and traffickers. The proposal is currently awaiting formal approval from the home department.
State-of-the-Art Intelligence Unit
This week, DGP Gaurav Yadav inaugurated the STF's new intelligence and technical unit (SITU) at the Punjab Police intelligence headquarters in SAS Nagar. The unit, equipped with advanced technology and software, is designed to enhance the STF's ability to combat drug trafficking. The facility, costing ₹212 crores, features sophisticated systems for the meticulous analysis of drug-related data, communication, social media engagements, financial transactions, and detailed profiling of drug traffickers.
Significant Investment in Anti-Drug Initiatives
The state government had previously allocated ₹214.6 crores to augment the STF's capabilities. Of this, ₹21 crores was spent on the construction of the SITU, and software procurement involved an investment of ₹11 crores. The STF now has 43 technically skilled police personnel leveraging these advanced resources to intensify their efforts against drug trafficking.
Historical Context and Future Outlook
The need to strengthen the STF has been recognized since its establishment during the tenure of the Captain Amarinder Singh-led Congress government. ADGP Harpreet Sidhu, who was instrumental in setting up the STF, had initially proposed a strength of 1,200 personnel. Although this proposal did not materialize then, the current expansion is a step towards realizing that vision.
An STF official, who wished to remain unnamed, emphasized the critical role of the STF in deeply analyzing drug-related cases and developing new strategies. "More strength in the STF was much needed," the official said, highlighting the importance of this initiative in the ongoing battle against drugs.
Commitment to a Drug-Free Punjab
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's government remains steadfast in its resolve to make Punjab drug-free. By doubling the strength of the STF and equipping it with cutting-edge technology, the government aims to significantly curb drug trafficking and ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.
